Crime of the week 6/14/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

Over the past several weeks there have been numerous arsons throughout the city of Decatur.  A large portion of these arsons are occurring at residences within a few blocks of Old Kings Orchard Community Center which is located at 815 N Church Street.

Crime of the week 5/17/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On the morning of July 5th, 2018 at approximately 12:30 A.M. DPD Officers responded to shots fired in the 1200 block of E Whitmer.  While on scene a gunshot victim named Dy’Rek Griffin was brought to St Mary’s Hospital.  Dy’Rek had been shot once in the head and succumbed to his injury. 

The investigation showed Dy’Rek was at a 4th of July celebration at 1245 E Whitmer and was shot 1 time while at the party.

Crime of the Week 5/10/21

Crime of the week 5/10/2021:

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On December 22nd, 2020 at approximately 11:50 A.M. Decatur Police were dispatched to the 500 block of S Haworth in reference to a deceased individual being located near a property in this block.  This individual would later be identified as Timothy Clemmons. 

Timothy was abducted the previous day in the 1300 block of N Water.  Timothy’s car was located in this block and there was evidence of a physical altercation near his vehicle. 

A silver Chevrolet Venture Van is believed is believed to be involved in this crime.

News release 3/22/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On March 15th, 2021 at approximately 4:15PM, Decatur Police were dispatched to the intersection of N College St and W Packard St in reference to a shooting.

Officers arrived on scene and spoke to a witness who observed a newer black four door passenger car with dark tinted windows traveling N/B on College street.  This suspect vehicle stopped in the roadway in front of a residence in the 1000 block of N College. A b/m suspect was observed leaning out a passenger side window where he fired several rounds with a handgun towards a residence in this block.  After the shots were fired the suspect vehicle was observed driving E/B on Packard street.  Observed in the rear driver’s seat of the suspect vehicle was another b/m, however there is no further suspect description.

Also, involved was a gray four door passenger car which fled the area S/B from the 1000 block N College street during the shooting.

News Release 2/15/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On February 8th, 2021 at approximately 3:00 AM several residents in the 2400 block of North Florian Ave. were woken up to the sound of multiple gun shots.  

The following morning Decatur Police observed damage to a vehicle and building in this block that had sustained damage from the gun shots. 

The residents in the area who heard the shooting had no suspect information.

News Release 1/11/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week.

On December 22nd at approximately 10:00 PM, Decatur Police responded to the 200 block of W Leafland in reference to a shooting.  On arrival, they located a gunshot victim inside a vehicle, later identified as Jayleon Cummings who was deceased. 

Witnesses in the area informed police they heard numerous gun shots.  A silver or gray colored 4-Door Sedan with tinted windows was observed traveling E/B in the 200 block of W Leafland at a high rate of speed after the shooting.

News Release 1/4/21

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On December 29th, 2020 at approximately 7:30PM Decatur Police responded to Little Caesars located at 1925 N Water in reference to an aggravated robbery. 

Officers arrived on scene and spoke to the employees who advised a suspect just entered the business and displayed a handwritten note which stated “empty the register.”  The suspect kept one hand in his hooded shirt implying he had a handgun.   During this interaction the suspect spoke and the employees said the suspect had a deep voice.  The suspect left Little Caesars on foot in a S/W direction. 

The suspect was described as dark skinned b/m, average build, approx. 5’10” – 6’0” tall, wearing a blue hooded shirt, blue colored face mask, and gray colored pants.  The suspect was observed to have a tattoo on the top of his left hand between his thumb and index finger.

News Release 12/14/20

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week.

On November 14th 2020 at approximately 6:38 PM, Decatur Police responded to JB’s, located at 1301 N Calhoun in reference to a shooting.  Officers arrived on scene and observed a subject lying on the floor inside of the business, unresponsive.  This subject would later be identified as John Betscher.   

John was the owner of this business and working alone when an unknown suspect pulled up to the drive-up window. This suspect fired multiple shots, striking John and then the suspect drove away from the business north on Calhoun street.  Unfortunately, John would later succumb to his injuries from the gun shots.

There is minimal suspect information, and the Decatur Police Department is asking for the public’s help.

News Release 12/7/20

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. 

On November 8th, 2020 at approximately 9:50 PM Decatur Police responded to the 2600 block of N Morgan in reference to a home invasion.  Officers spoke to the victim who advised she was standing outside her residence and observed two individuals each armed with handguns approach her.  These suspects forced the victim inside the residence where they began threatening her life.   One suspect fired one shot inside the home which didn’t strike anyone. 

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money along with the victim’s vehicle. This vehicle was later recovered in the 3400 block of Hummingbird Dr., unoccupied.   

The first suspect was described as a dark skinned black male, approx.5’5” tall, and 190 pounds.  This suspect was wearing a full faced black ski mask and dressed in all black clothing. 

The second suspect was described as a light skinned black male, approx. 25yoa, 6’0” tall, and 180 pounds.  This suspect was observed wearing a blue surgical mask, and all black clothing.

Press Release 11/23/20

The Decatur Police Department needs your help in solving this weeks crime of the week.

On the evening of November 28th 2019, Decatur police responded to the intersection of N Martin Luther King Drive and E Cantrell Street in reference to a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and observed a b/m later identified as Tommy King lying face down in the roadway. Tommy was observed to have been shot multiple times and later passed due to his injuries.

It is believed the suspect who committed the shooting was dropped off in the area by an unknown vehicle.

Witnesses observed seeing a b/m, wearing dark colored clothing, and white shoes chasing Tommy on foot. Witnesses observed this suspect shoot Tommy then turn and run north towards the 500 block of E Sheridan.

It has been approximately one year since this homicide and the Decatur Police Department is asking for your help.
